Does anyone know if you can hook the positive and negative wires off of the ignitor directly to the coil or do you have to go to the ignition wires first?

The black wire always connects to the coil's "-" terminal.
If your ignition system uses a ballast resistance, you cannot use the "+" terminal of the coil to power the Pertronix module.
The red wire needs to be connected to a constant +12V supply, so it's probably best to save yourself the headache and just connect it to the ignition switch, regardless of whether your ignition has a ballast resistor or not.
