There are two easy ways to tell.
1. There is a flat spot above the fuel pump on the engine block, next to the head. It has the engine size on it. Brake cleaner or some other solvent is usually required to get the gunk off it. It's hard to see on a scout due to the alternator being in the way as viewed from the top, but it can be done by getting your eyeballs in the right spot. Sometimes a small mirror helps.
2. There are a couple of pointed things in the back of the engine, behind the valley pan, between the heads. They are raised points. If they are 7 inches apart, it's a 304. If they are 8 inches apart, it's a 345.
The 266 is the same size as the 304. The 392 is the same size as the 345. The assumption here is that you have a stock engine, so 304 and 345 would be the sizes.
