the main ring gear ratio is 6:38 so how can i tell what the ratio of the 2 speed is.

Use your tach. Drive 2000 rpms, check speed in top gear. Then use same rpm, check speed in top gear, other ratio. Compare the 6.38 to the other speed.

The other method is to jack up the back end of the truck and have your nephew count the driveshaft revolutions per wheel rotation in each ratio. If you have an electric switcher on the axle, it should work just fine with the key on and the engine off or the transmission in neutral with it running.

That makes it easier. Spin the wheel, watch the yoke turn. You can manually put it in either high or low range.

Multiply by 1.39 to get the high. Look on the driveshaft end of the pinion for the code. Mine is 743, meaning 7 teeth on the pinion and 43 on the ring gear. So I have a 6.14 on the high end, 8.55 on the low. Too low for my use.

Mine has a sheared pinion. Was thinking of pulling the axels and swapping the carrier as a unit.
