Thanks to everybody who responded to my last question. Your advice was a big help. On to my next question. Does anyone know of or have access to a pdf version of the IH service manual for 71 -75 Scouts. I know in the motorcycle field we use the computerized version of the service manuals all the time. Just wondering if such a thing exists?

Don't be cheap, by the manuals so they can be beside you at the vehicle.

And no, as far as i know they don't exist on CD as it is to much info and copyrighted.

The service manuals are reprints from microfilm, since they were originally made before scanners and modern personal computers were available. Remember that the Scout line was discontinued in 1980, and the best computer you could get back then was a Tandy with a cassette tape drive. The biggest hard drive you could get then was practially non-existent, and 64K of memory was considered top of the line.

As a result, the manuals are put together using the old fashioned photo-printing methods, and nobody has scanned them into .pdf. The labor involved would simply be too much.

www.binderbooks.com still prints and sells the manuals under license from the light line partnership, which means any light line dealer can get them for you. This includes Superscoutspecialists, light line of louisiana, IH Only, and others.

The paper book is thick, and it is very comprehensive. It is well worth the cost to keep it in a waterproof pouch in your vehicle or on the shelf in your garage.

Hey there.. sorry for drudging up an old topic, but it falls in line with a question I had.

Is the Service Manual helpful to someone that doesn't know a whole lot about the mechanics of vehicles?
(pretty much my extent so far has been rebuilding the carb on the '77 Scout, but am now pretty much at a phase where I need to start replacing/fixing fuel lines and brake lines, and the brakes themselves, etc...)

And will it be helpful to me when determining how to go about getting the proper parts? (ie: giving out part numbers, etc..?)

I've never seen an automotive service manual before (just owners manuals), so my questions might seem kinda weird.

My manuals do not give specific part numbers. As far as being helpful to a novice I think it is. For example the section on the Air Conditioning teaches the entire concept of air cooling before it gets in to the information specific to the vehicle. The manuals are expensive but they are worth having. Instructions on how to do things are very valuable. The electrical diagrams are also very useful. I haven't run into anything where a part number or lack of one has stopped me from doing anything. Usually parts are readily available at the local auto parts store just by giving them a description. Hope This helps. By the way you can buy part number manuals but I can't justify it.

I don't mind the price too much of the book itself... I just wish shipping/handling etc. wasn't 1/3 the cost.

I would recommend the manual to anyone but only because there is only 1 available that I'm aware of. I find it to be difficult to use (poor indexing, unclear diagrams and schematics, blah blah). It is the only game in town as far as I know.

That all said, I got a copy with the truck I bought a few months ago and the copy is terrible. I saw another version tonight that was a much much clearer print and the photos were actually visible. I'm not sure how to know which quality of print you'll get by mail, but the better looking one had blue text on the cover, mine is all black...probably not a great test of print quality).

Does anyone know how to get a clearly printed version?
