Hello, I have a 1980 scout diesel with 3.73 ratio and I believe the -19 wide trans with granny gear for first. I am looking to improve it for street driving, better startup speeds. Now that I had a mechanic tell me the gear ratio, I called superscoutspecialists and was told that my best move might be replacing the t-19 wide with a t-19 close ratio, and maybe then if I have to also going smaller on the tires (they're 35's right now, what it came with from PO)

This sounds reasonable to me, but the tranny is 350, plus shipping, plus labor, so trying to do some research first. The engine seems good, the body is good, so doesn't seem like a bad investment if it improves it as a daily driver. Thanks for any information.

I have a sd33t with 3.73s, 33" tires and the close ratio. It drives pretty good. 1st is a touch low and I wouldn't mind a bit more gear on the highway but you'll like it. What don't you like about the wide ratio?

edit: I re-read and noticed you have 35s. I think this'll be a nice setup!!

the bad thing about the wide ratio seems to be how slow it starts off, and if I try to skip and just use second it doesn't quite make it either

also, if I start from a stop and try to go up even a medium grade its a real struggle

once I'm cruising its OK in 3 and 4th, but 1st and second are pretty bad

you mentioned wishing you had more gear on the highway, how do you mean? I drive ok on the highway an am wondering if I will lose anything in that regard by switching? I can drive 65 comfortably and am ok with that, just want to drive better in stop and go and uphill better

Nope, Highway in 4th gear will be exactly the same. You'll like the narrow trans. It's great for street. I wish I had 3.54 instead of 3.73 to just cut the highway RPM a touch.

I don't know on that one. There's numbers on top of the trans, I think on the top cover but I'm not familiar with what they should be.

My 1980 had the diesel with the close ratio and I really liked it, got 24 mpg and ran it on and off road. I also had a '77 SSII with the 196 wide ratio. From driving the two the wide ratio reminds me of a 3spd w/overdrive which on the 196 was a pain on hills. I really like the close ratio and would never swap it out and I had 33's on driving with it. Just my opinion.
