View Full Version : make a soft top and frame
Has anyone ever made their own frame and soft top for a scout. I have a commercial pfaff sewing machine and also a tipman leather sewer. It shouldn't be that hard to do. Just wondering. I found a couple of sites selling canvas and fittings. canvas-fabrics.com and sailrite.com. Any ideas?

My biggest concern has always been the frame. I was just discussing making vehicle covers for scout IIs, but a soft top is really something I want more.
I was thinking along the lines of something that would fit over a roll cage, or a roll bar plus rear frame piece above the tailgate. That would satisfy my needs. I also would like something simple.
For example, the place where the lift gate goes? Fasten with a zipper, snap to the tailgate.
Main cover? Three pieces, also possibly zippered and snapped, or else just one piece with snaps.
Easy frame to snap/bolt in and out. The only soft tops I have seen have been of good quality material, but they were a major pain in the backside to use.
It seems logical to simply use the hard top as a template, at least for the measurements. I don't think side windows are necessary, but I have always thought they would be nice if the rear seats were being used.
I have a large roll of green heavy canvas that would certainly do to experiment with for a trial go at it. I don't have a roll bar or cage yet but intend to do that too. I'll keep you posted on how it's going...who knows we may come up with something. I had a soft top on a jeep and it was a pain. That's kinda what I had in mind for framework though. I found where clear vinyl can be purchased for windows.

hey guys, i was wondering the same thing. I can take some measurements and diagrams if you like and see if you are able to reproduce the frame. it should not be that hard to do.
just the lengths and radius of the bents. it is all made from 1/2 o r3/4 aluminum tubing. and couple of the L brackets for the rails.
That would be great if you could do that. I really don't see a problem in making one and save the $$$$$$ they demand for them. I always wanted a soft half top for the jeep......that's gonna be in the making also. Imagination and determination is all it takes.
